How to Conserve Water With a Dual Flush Toilet

There are multiple reasons to conserve water in your home. For one, it’s good for the environment. And second, it can save you money if you are connected to a municipal water supply.

How to Conserve Water With a Dual Flush Toilet

We’ve all heard some of the common ways to reduce water use, including turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth, using high-efficiency appliances, and installing low-flow faucets and showerheads. But did you know there’s a type of toilet designed to minimize the amount of water that goes down the drain? It’s called a dual flush toilet.

Dual flush toilet versus standard toilet

If you put a standard toilet and a dual flush toilet next to each other, it may be hard to tell them apart. But there are key differences in how these types of toilets operate.

The traditional toilet uses the same amount of water for every flush. On the other hand, a dual flush toilet changes the amount of water depending on whether liquid or solid waste is being flushed. Since liquid waste doesn’t need as much force to empty the toilet bowl, this can save a few gallons every flush.

Dual flush toilets also have a larger trapway (the hole at the bottom of the bowl) and use a different method for pushing water from the tank into the bowl (no siphoning action like standard toilets).

How a dual flush toilet works

If a dual flush toilet sounds complicated to operate, we’re here to tell you that it’s surprisingly easy and convenient. Once you finish your business, instead of pushing down a single toilet handle, you push one of two buttons to select the appropriate level of flushing power. There’s one button for liquid waste (less water) and another for solid waste (more water). Some dual flush toilets have levers instead of buttons, but the idea of selecting your flush is the same.

There are a few drawbacks to dual flush toilets to consider before installing them in your home. First, they are typically more expensive than standard toilets. Also, they can also get dirtier and require cleaning more often due to the lower water flow.

For homeowners that want to conserve water and save money, a dual flush toilet can be a great option. Dual flush toilets are easy to use and allow you to adjust the level of flush based on whether you’re disposing of liquid or solid waste.
