Sewer Repair using a Pipe Stent, Trenchless Repair or Sewer Relining

No matter what you call it, we can explain what a stent, trenchless or relining repair is – that you’ve been hearing so much about

Pipe Stents allow plumbers to line a sewer pipe, covering cracks, breaks, or separations

When it comes to sewer pipes, what’s underground is sometimes best left underground. However, if something goes wrong it can be extremely difficult to fix something you can’t see. Even though cameras now allow plumbers to travel through your sewer system and identify issues, you can’t fix a broken pipe from the inside (until now).

So, what is a pipe stent exactly?

A Pipe Stent allows us to repair underground or in-wall sewer pipes without the need for excavation or demolition. We essentially build a new pipe of pipe inside the old one. Kinda like a sock, it completely seals off any cracks, breaks, or separations that are especially common with a traditional clay sewer pipe. You don’t have to dig, tear up floors or walls or restore the existing pipe.

Trenchless sewer repair vs traditional methods

It used to be that replacing underground sewer pipes involved digging a large trench that would ruin gardens and walkways. They often involve heavy-duty excavation equipment, large holes in your yard, huge piles of dirt in your home or building, the inconvenience of re-routed traffic, and the cost of putting everything back together again.

Is a Pipe Stent or Sewer Relining right for me?

Every job is different, but there are some basic steps to determine if the crack, break or separation could be fixed with a stent. One of our service technicians will come out and:

  • We’ll perform a detailed inspection—did a pipe burst or has it shifted, or is there a blockage?
  • That will tell us whether a pipe relining or stent would be the best solution and we’ll provide a detailed quote to do the installation
  • Our team will clear the pipe of any debris using a hydro jet
  • Once the old pipe is clear, the stent will be inserted and left to cure, permanently binding the liner to the pipe
  • Our service technicians will give the new system a final inspection
  • If we find that a pipe stent or sewer relining won’t work, we will provide you with a competitive quote to dig up the sewer and make the repair using the traditional method

Types of trenchless sewer repair, pipe stents, or pipe relining

  • Cured-in-place-pipe lining (Also called structural pipe lining) – involves creating a new pipe within the old one by inserting a liner into the damaged pipe and leaving it to cure for a few hours
  • Spray lining and brush coating – this trenchless technique is similar to structural pipe lining. However, instead of using a liner to create a new inner pipe, an epoxy or flexible polymer is sprayed or brushed onto the inside of the damaged pipe.
  • Pipe bursting – a winch with an attached bursting head pulls a brand new pipe into the old pipe. The old pipe is broken and the new one takes its place.
  • Slip lining – Slip lining dates all the way back to the 1940s and involves inserting a smaller diameter pipe into the damaged one and then filling the area around it with grout. Although slip lining is considered a trenchless technique, it’s more invasive than the above-mentioned techniques because more room needs to be cleared to insert the new inner replacement pipe sections.
